The Day The Sky Turned Green?
I’m sharing this because I want to know if anyone has ever had a similar experience.
When I was six, in the late summer of 1994, my family were all sat around the living room watching Boy Meets World. It was around 7:00 or so on a South Texas night, with a cool breeze. It was a mild evening, the cooling hour of dusk just after sundown, when the wind off the nearby bay blew gently.
We lived in a semi-rural area near a shipyard, and so had a big field which we kept mowed and about twenty acres of live oak woods surrounding it. We had a humble, decaying double wide in which the seven of us shared rooms.
My dad asked me to go outside and check the barbeque grill, to poke the chicken and see if it was done. This I did, and it was, but what happened next both freaked me out and got me really excited. The air all around me suddenly turned green. The sky was green, the dim light from the fading sunset was green, even the fireflies sparked green. I ran up the back steps inside and yelled for my family to come see. Inside the house the light looked normal. As I was the littlest kid they thought I was making it up, so my older brother who was eight came and poked his head out the door in a sarcastic way. But he saw the green also.
“Guys! Come and look!” We squeaked, and me and my brother jumped down the steps and ran excited to the big field to get a more expansive view of the phenomenon.
One by one they all came out, and my two brothers, two sisters and I were the most excited. Even our old dog Ginger ran and played. My mother seemed to wander around in a daze as we played baseball and tried to catch the green fireflies, while my dad tried to mansplain the green everything ness. We paid him no mind, just frolicking and having a rare moment of unbridled wonder…
Remember, this was a clear night. No storm clouds, just a light wind and green air.
After about forty minutes the green light faded back to normal as darkness set in. We all trooped back to the house. My brother and I got the chicken off the grill (a bit burnt) and we all ate dinner. All we could talk about was the green.
But then, after a few days, it was like their memory was altered. Whenever my six year old self would bring it up, “remember the green air we had that time?” They would look at me blankly like “wut?”
To this day I am the only member who remembers the day everything turned green. I feel a bit crazy, but I know it really happened, I can still remember the vivid feeling of wonder on their faces which I had never seen before. Maybe they forgot because of our childhood trauma (my dad was very abusive) but even if that’s true, I just wish I had an explanation or at least someone who could share a similar experience.
Whatever it was, it had to have been a local event, as the news did not cover it, and we lived on a large plot of about 20 acres or so with a mysterious forest and even a small swamp.
