Incredibly Creepy Experiences At Wissahickon House, Germantown, Philadelphia
I want to start off by saying I’m an avid fan of your channel. You’ve touched on several topics of interest and brought new ones to my attention. After watching your videos containing weird experiences etc., straight from other viewers, I decided to share my personal accountant as well, hoping maybe someone else has seen the same thing and can provide more information.
In 2007, my family and I were renting a three bedroom loft style apartment called the Wissahickon House in a neighbourhood of Philadelphia called Germantown. Several odd, paranormal events occurred at this location, from a UFO sighting early one morning, to poltergeist activity.
A few weeks after moving in, being very curious, I saw the side alley gate that led to the back of the building was open. I followed the path with our roommate at the time, who was also curious, and we found the basement door had been carelessly left open as well. Down there, the huge basement was only half lit, and each side was sectioned off by brick walls and heavy metal sliding doors. What creeped us out, was an old sign on each door that read:
WARDEN IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST OR STOLEN ITEMS.
We looked at one another, feeling unwelcome all of a sudden, and left. We did not go into the basement of the building ever again. There was something off about it, much more than the usual fact of being a dank basement space.
With this same roommate one morning, we witnessed a silent, silver diamond shape spinning in the air passed the building, just over the nearby train station. The streets were quiet, and I don’t know if anyone else reported this sighting, let alone witnessed it. Another occurrence happened when my brother and I were home alone, talking together as I did laundry. Now, the loft space on the first floor was an open plan, so our stack-able unit was visible from the kitchen area as was everything else on that floor. Anyway, as I faced my brother in conversation, we each saw a lollipop fly off the kitchen counter, landing right in front of my brother’s foot. We froze, staring at it, then looked at one another in reassurance. The loft was rather large, so this candy didn’t simply fall off the counter, it literally flew a considerable distance as though it had been thrown.
My mother and I tried to gather information on the building after she began having nightmares of a mulatto girl being chained up in the attic of the building sometime in what might have been the early 19th century. Other than the building being registered as a historic site, there was no other information provided to us by the Germantown Historical Society. I even attempted on various occasions to ask the landlord at the time, but she only said that it had been a retirement home for several decades before being turned into apartments. She believed it was a plantation at one point, but I find this theory improbable, despite my mother’s nightmares and think it may have been some sort of hospital before being a retirement home. She would allude to the fact it was haunted but never actually say that it was…something my family and I found very strange….but the most terrifying thing happened to me in the early morning hours.
Now, our apartment was on the very top floor with a large window dominating the entrance and kitchen area. At this time, I was very depressed and suffering from insomnia, causing me to stay up at all hours of the night reading and painting. I want to stress that I was NOT in any way under the influence of drugs or alcohol, I was 17 and wouldn’t drink for another few years.
Anyway, one night, after returning from the bathroom to go to my bedroom on the second floor of the loft, I saw a large, amphibian-like creature that took up nearly half the surface of the window, staring back at me. I was so shocked, so terrified, that I froze staring at it. It looked at me for what felt like several minutes, but in truth, it was mere seconds; before jumping up onto the roof. I got the impression that it was just as afraid of me as I was of it….
I remember looking into its eyes, deep, dark and soulful. It was definitely alive, the eyes were large, oval, and possibly black. Its hands and feet were pressed up to the glass in what seemed like an effort to hold it up, the fingers and toes were webbed, much like a frog…it’s mouth was puckered, like a fish. The best description I can give, is of Abe Sapien from Hellboy, although not standing upright or so “clean” looking….the way it was clinging to the window, and the way it moved to the roof, reminded me of the stance and movements of the Licker creatures from the Resident Evil video games.
After the creature vanished from the window, I darted up to my room in terror, locked the door and tried desperately to fall asleep. Trying to rationalise what I saw in my brain, and not telling a soul for fear of sounding absolutely insane. I never told anyone about that night, until several years later after my family and I had moved. When I revealed my story, beginning to describe the creature, my brother interrupted me in surprise:
“YOU SAW THAT THING TOO!?”
I couldn’t believe it; it was now confirmed, my brother and I saw the same exact thing on SEPARATE occasions. The damned thing is real.
Shortly after confirming my brother and I saw the same thing, I tried desperately scanning the internet for signs of a creature that matched this description, whether in the Germantown/Philadelphia area, or anywhere else in the world. So far my efforts have been fruitless, even alien descriptions and alleged pictures do not come close to what I saw. I do not think the creature is a ghost or spirit either, despite how short I saw it, I can tell you it’s alive. I do not have any photos of the thing I saw, and there are only a few pictures of the building, but I have attached those with my story….I attempted to get stories from other tenants that lived in the building when I resided there, but no one would talk. Another thing I found strange…Other than this creature, the building is very odd. I experienced very dark times while living there, suffering from restless nights, somewhere I did not sleep at all, I had my first ever episode of sleep paralysis as well.
My brother and I also would hear something living in the roof above our rooms that would constantly be moving, screaming, and fighting something else. We complained several times to the landlord about this, and they brushed it off as being a wild animal. We insisted it sounded very large, and even if it were an animal, something needed to be done. Especially since we concluded something had died up there and was filling the entire apartment with a foul odour that would not go away. But for some reason, nothing was ever done, and no one was ever called to see what was living above us. I’m really hoping that someone else reads my story that has either resided at this location as well, can bring forward their own experiences if any. Or at the very least, have seen the creature that my brother and I witnessed in our loft window all those years ago. Any information about this location, its history, the creature, etc. would ease our minds after all these years.
