Fear Can Kill!
This is a real story that happened in Chile a couple of years ago, and a clear demonstration of what fear is capable of if one does not have suitable control over it.
One night, one of my uncles was at a bar with one of his friends. They had been drinking and were tipsy, and decided it was time to head home. The sun had gone down and the streets were fairly abandoned apart from a scarce few people. As they were walking home, they came across the cemetery where my Uncle challenged his friend.
The challenge was that they split up, and the first to reach the end of the cemetery wins. One must remember that the cemetery was pitch black at night with no lights to illuminate the stone paths. Both were apprehensive but didn’t want to seem coward-like in front of the other, and so they set off as fast as they could. My Uncle won, panting for breath he searched for his friend but he could not be seen. He waited for his friend but he was nowhere to be seen. Stricken with fear, he called the police as he could not bear to reenter the cemetery.
The next morning, my Uncle’s friend was found dead in the cemetery. A branch got caught in his jacket and, unable to see what it was, he mistook this for somebody holding him back. Fear took over, accompanied by the alcohol, and he suffered a heart attack which ultimately led to his unfortunate death.
