Could It Really Be True That A Cardinal Is The Spirit Of A Passed Loved One?
I apologize if this reading turns out to be long, I want to share my story because I want to know if anyone else has had this happen or if anyone else’s families have this same superstition.
Growing up I was always told if you saw a cardinal, that meant a loved one that had passed was there watching over you. Now that I’m 18 I’ve come to the conclusion that that statement is absolutely 100% right for me.
When I was 7, I lost my step-dad, Ryan. He was an amazing person, he always encouraged me to do things, he and I always watched basketball in his favorite recliner in the living room. Anyway, one day Ryan went to his brother’s apartment to spend the night and hang out, the next morning my mom and I went to pick him up, but we found out he had overdosed on drugs. My mom never knew that I saw his lifeless body.
After his funeral, I would see him in the middle of the night sitting in his recliner. I was always too baffled to say anything. When my mom got with my new stepdad, I stopped seeing Ryan until we moved into a new house. The first day we moved in I saw a cardinal outside. Cardinals have always been my favourite birds, so I was excited. That night I woke up and saw Ryan in my doorway, he was smiling at me, and after about 20 seconds he seemed to just dissolve into the dark. When I told my mom she told me I had just been dreaming, but I knew I wasn’t, I was wide awake.
In 2012 I lost my grandmother. This was really hard for me because she was the only person I was ever truly close to, and at the time I was also struggling with keeping the secret that I was a lesbian. She was cremated, something that she didn’t want. We had a small service for her, and by small I mean her four children and I gathered by her headstone crying and burying things with her. I remember I had put a small stuffed kitten in the hole with her ashes so that she had her cat with her.
I didn’t see my grandma after she died like I had with Ryan, not until I moved to Georgia. I started my freshman year rough and one day walking to the office I saw a cardinal on a tree branch. When I turned my grandmother was in front of me smiling. I was so shocked. I remember running to the restroom and crying and crying. For my entire freshman year when I saw a cardinal, I also saw my grandma, after 20 seconds she would always disappear.
Now when I see cardinals, I don’t see my grandma or Ryan anymore, I just feel this strange tingling sensation on the back of my head and neck. My mom experiences it too, and we both believe it is my grandma and Ryan.
Has anyone else ever had this experience before?
