Black Hooded Witches
As a little girl, I often played impromptu games of hide and seek. I hid around the house or in stores from my mother and grandmother. I never went far and could often see them from wherever I was hiding. One night, I hid in my grandmother’s garage. The door connected to the kitchen and I could hear them on the other side. On this particular night, I looked over to see that the garage door to the driveway was open. I was uneasy, since I’d never hidden outside at night before. However, when I tried to sneak back inside, I noticed the door was locked. When I looked back out the garage door to the driveway, I saw three figures cloaked in black with tall, pointed hats. Their faces were covered and they were walking shoulder to shoulder like they were of a singular mind they were all the same height, but they weren’t very tall… around 5’2 would be my guess….. They were petite in frame, but I couldn’t tell if they were make or female. Their cloaks were silky and didn’t appear to have eyes cut out. I couldn’t tell if their hats were brimmed or if their cloaks had long necks.
I remembered thinking their hats looked like long Batman cowels. I thought they were scary and tried to keep quiet and still so they wouldn’t see me from the sidewalk. Just as they passed under the streetlight in front of the garage, they turned to me as one and came toward me. They maintained their relaxed pace, but that only made it seem more menacing. I started pounding on the locked door to the kitchen in a total panic. My mother opened the door and by the time she could understand what I’d said, they were gone. There was no one on my grandmother’s street to be seen. A few years later, I’d heard about occult activity in Florida and missing children. It brought me right back to that night in the garage. Flash forward to my adult life and I saw a similar type of cloak on figures in the intro sequence of the show, American Horror Story (Coven) I went cold and showed my husband the show, having told him the garage story previously. I never knew that witches were depicted this way and often wonder if anyone else has seen anything like this too.
